There are two species of rat in the uk the most common being rattus norvegicus the common brown rat and rattus rattus the black rat only found around some of our uk shipping ports. The brown rat weighs between 300 to 500 Grams lives mainly in burrows but will take up home in cavity walls and loft spaces.they live in groups called a clan with one dominant male.the brown rat is a true omnivore and will consume almost anything.the brown rat can breed through out the year,with the female producing up to five litters a year the gestation period is only 21 days, and litters can number up to 14 although 7 is common. They reach sexual maturity in about 5 weeks. The maximum life span is about three years.
